Caring For Your New Denture
Your new denture restores your smile and your ability to chew and speak with confidence. Like anything new, it takes a short adjustment period to feel natural. A little patience and good daily care make all the difference.
The Adjustment Period
- It feels bulky and different at first. This is completely normal and improves quickly as you adjust.
- Sore spots can develop the first week or two. Do not suffer through them, a quick adjustment fixes them.
- Extra saliva the first few days is normal and settles.
Eating & Speaking
- Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chewing on both sides evenly.
- Add harder foods gradually as you gain confidence.
- Speech takes a few days. Reading aloud at home speeds it up.
Daily Cleaning
- Rinse after meals to clear food and debris.
- Brush it daily with a denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner, not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive.
- Clean over a folded towel or water-filled sink so it does not break if dropped.
Overnight
- Take it out every night to let your gums rest. Leaving it in puts you at risk for a fungal infection called candidiasis.
- Soak it in water or denture solution so it does not dry out and warp.
Call Us If
- A sore spot is not improving. We can adjust it quickly so do not wait it out.
- The denture feels loose, rocks, or clicks when you eat or talk.
- You have persistent gum pain, swelling, or sores.
- Anything feels off about the fit or comfort.
How To Keep Your Denture And Mouth Healthy
A clean denture and healthy gums underneath are what keep everything comfortable and lasting. Even with a full denture, caring for your mouth matters.
- Clean your denture every day and rinse after meals. A clean denture prevents odor, stain, and gum irritation.
- Brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth every morning to keep the tissue healthy and stimulated.
- Keep your checkups. Your mouth changes shape over time, so we check the fit and your gum health and reline or adjust when needed.
With good care, your denture stays comfortable and your smile stays strong!
